AI art direction, portfolio, get-hired, failure modes
The art director survives; the template-filler doesn't
Final lesson, and it closes the loop from lesson 1: the way through the worst opportunity score in the program is to become the person who directs AI and owns the brand, not the person AI replaces. This lesson covers the AI workflow, the portfolio that proves the defensible tier, the get-hired playbook, and the failure modes that keep designers at the commodity floor.
Midjourney and Firefly: ideation, not final
The professional AI-image workflow has three stages, and the machine only owns the first: generate (Midjourney/Firefly for concepts, moods, base imagery — ten directions in ten minutes), curate (your taste picks the one that fits the brand — most output is generic on purpose; it's trained on averages), and finish (into Photoshop: fix the hands and text artifacts, correct colors to palette, composite with real product shots, typeset properly — AI upscaling like Firefly's or Topaz for print resolution). Deliverables that skip stage three look AI-generated, and clients increasingly recognize the look.
What you own: taste, brand fit, speed
AI makes serviceable assets; it does not make coherent identity or exercise taste. You own the three things that don't automate: taste (knowing which output is good — trained in every critique drill you've done), brand fit (your lesson 2 system deciding what belongs), and speed (your lesson 4 production discipline delivering it today, on-brand, correctly named).
"You can, and for some things you should — I use Firefly and Midjourney daily. What they won't give you is consistency: fifty future graphics that all look like YOUR brand, finished so nothing reads as AI-generated. I'm a brand designer and AI art director — the AI gives us production speed, I make sure everything it touches still looks like you."
Price that pitch on brand systems and outcomes — identity packages, monthly collateral retainers — never per graphic. Per-graphic pricing is the $400/mo commodity floor negotiating against a free tool; systems pricing is the $1,000-1,200/mo (~₱58k-70k) expert band.
The portfolio: four artifacts
- A brand-identity case study — your mini brand grown up: logo system, type, color, collateral, and the guidelines doc (lesson 2 drill, expanded).
- A vector logo + guidelines excerpt — proof of Illustrator depth, the anti-commodity signal.
- An Adobe retouch/composite sample — before and after.
- An AI before/after — raw generation beside your finished, brand-corrected version. This one artifact demonstrates the entire "AI art director" positioning in a single image pair.
Add your lesson 3 variant set if you're targeting the production lane. Host it cleanly — Behance, a simple site, or an organized Drive folder.
Get hired: refuse the commodity frame
OnlineJobs.ph and Upwork list heavy design demand — win by never accepting the commodity framing. Positioning: "brand designer + AI art director" or production-for-a-niche ("design VA for real-estate teams"), never "Canva graphics, cheap and fast." First-client path from the playbook: offer a brand mini-audit — five specific places the prospect's brand contradicts itself — then present an identity concept and systems upgrade, and convert to an identity project or monthly collateral retainer. Certs that help tip ties: Adobe Certified Professional (Photoshop/Illustrator) and Canva's certification; neither replaces the portfolio.
The failure modes
- A Canva-only portfolio — pure commodity that AI now out-produces at the bottom.
- Competing with Canva templates on price — you cannot underprice free; reposition or lose.
- Skipping typography and Adobe — the exact skills that separate you from the machine.
- Selling one-off graphics instead of brand systems and art direction.
- Treating AI as competition to avoid rather than a tool to direct.
Do this now
The capstone drill — 25 minutes now, built out over the week:
- Create your AI before/after: generate one brand image with Firefly or any free tool, then finish it — recolor to your mini-brand palette, fix artifacts, add typeset text. Export the pair side by side.
- Assemble your folder: mini brand sheet, production system screenshots, ad variant set, and the AI before/after, with a one-line caption each.
- Write your positioning line: "Brand designer + AI art director for [niche]."
- Register for the next live training on the PHVA platform's events page — bring the folder link for a portfolio review.
You entered this course through the worst opportunity score in the program. You leave it holding the only version of this role the 2026 market still pays for — or the clarity to pick a different course entirely. Both are wins.
